Design & Construction is also responsible for the documentation and stewardship of Design Standards and Guidelines for Campus Planning, Site and Building Design, Furnishings, High Performance Buildings, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Systems.

External Renovations & Capital Repairs

Design & Construction works with Plant Operations and others facilities maintenance professionals to assess the current conditions of our facilities and grounds, identify and prioritize areas of need, and initiate and manage the necessary work to restore our spaces.  This includes, but is not limited to, renovations required to make spaces accessible, replacement of equipment that has reached the end of its productive life, and major building repairs or alterations.

Feasibility Studies

If you have a need for space and are not sure of the exact solution and/or direction, preliminary studies are the first step.  We will help you to determine the scope of the study required and engage outside professional consultants, to conduct and document these investigations in collaboration with the JHU team. 

In addition to planning for individual spaces and buildings, Design & Construction also leads campus Master Plan efforts.  Careful planning for the future is the best way to assure that our land and facilities are used effectively, efficiently and to consider the development of the university as a whole.

Furniture / Interiors

Design & Construction can assist with the process of selecting and procuring furniture for an existing space, a larger renovation or a new construction project. We will help you develop a furniture layout, provide guidance on selecting furniture styles, manufacturers, and finishes, and direct you to an approved vendor for purchasing. 

If you would like to rearrange the furniture in your existing space or reuse existing furniture in a new space, we can also help you envision a space plan for that furniture.

New Construction

Design & Construction assembles, guides and provides leadership to the entire team for new construction projects, from initial architectural programming, feasibility studies, budget determination, planning studies, and existing condition surveys, through building design, bidding, construction, occupancy and post-occupancy follow-up.  While some efforts are conducted utilizing Design & Construction staff, most involve the hiring of outside professional consultants. We typically assign an internal Project Manager to projects at the very beginning of a project, to work with the end-user throughout the process of selecting consultants, executing the work and ensuring that the results meet expectations.

Project Management

Design & Construction provides Project Management services for projects of all sizes, from the smallest renovation of an existing space to the largest new building.  All projects utilizing design professionals, or where building or trade construction permits are required, must be managed by our office. 

Our Project Managers will work with you to establish the scope of services required, solicit proposals from design and construction professionals, issue and manage contracts, facilitate project design review by required internal and external entities, maintain the project budget and schedule, and collect and maintain all close-out materials.

Interior renovations include improvements to the base building and/or interior space modifications.  Projects may be initiated by the Office of Facilities Management  (for example, accessibility or Life Safety improvements) or by individual divisions (for example, modifications to accommodate new or existing faculty or programs).  Every project, regardless of size, will be assigned to a Project Manager and handled in a similar manner.

Design & Construction has worked with graphic designers and sign installers to develop a University standard interior sign type, that provides flexibility for changing names and titles associated with offices, and University standard exterior sign types.  We can give you guidance on how to incorporate the University standard interior and exterior signs in your space or on your building.

Site Improvements & Landscaping

Design & Construction can help you to plan, design and execute site and landscape improvements within the overall framework of the Homewood Campus Master Plan and complying with JHU Design Standards and Guidelines.  Examples of sitework - that can be planned and performed either as a stand-alone project or in conjunction with a building construction or renovation project - include:

  • Rearranging or installing new site furniture (benches, bicycle racks, site lighting),
  • Installing new utilities,
  • Re-grading and landscaping
  • Improving access by repairing or installing new ramps, stairs and walkways
  • Implementing new Stormwater Management practices (such as raingardens, infiltration swales, green roofs, or impervious paving)
