Hop Reuse Hub FAQs

What is the Hop Reuse Hub?

The Hop Reuse Hub (HRH) was established to reduce waste by encouraging the use of quality, secondhand furniture previously owned by Johns Hopkins University departments while saving the University money by avoiding the purchase of new furniture. In addition to furniture, we offer office supplies and reupholstery services to the JHU community. We also host Fix-it Fairs for faculty, staff and student and provide donations to local Baltimore nonprofits. Download a copy of the Hop Reuse Hub's brochure

Who is the Reuse Hub’s Audience?

Funded by the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering, the HRH is primarily for the Greater Homewood campus. All JHU divisions may purchase furniture/office supplies and participate in programs; however, receiving of furniture from other divisions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Where is the Reuse Hub located?

The Hop Reuse Hub is located at 2817 E. Preston St., Baltimore MD 21213 in East Baltimore.

How do I view available furniture & office supplies?

The Hop Reuse Hub has a large selection of quality desks, bookcases, chairs, credenzas, filing cabinets, tables, white boards, bulletin boards, and other office supplies. You can leisurely view and request available furniture online. Please note, in order to view the furniture inventory and reserve items you must be connected to the Johns Hopkins network.

Is this program free?

We do not charge for furniture; however, the department is responsible for transportation of the furniture. This may involve hiring a 3rd party moving company in which case the costs incurred would be the responsibility of the department.

Departments on the Homewood Campus will be charged the hourly recycling labor fee for the removal of unwanted furniture from campus. These fees are charged in order to help recover our costs and ensure that we can continue to successfully achieve our mission.

How do I order furniture & office supplies?

Go to the furniture inventory, search for items you are looking for from the following categories: Boards, Bookshelves, Cabinets, Chairs, Desks, Tables, Miscellaneous

To request an item, simply select "reserve" on the screen. When you are ready to submit your order, select the cart at the top right hand side of the screen. This will open up a form for you to complete. You'll be asked to enter your JHED. Submitting the form does not ensure that you will receive the furniture you requested, but it does reserve it for you. The Recycling Coordinator will contact you to confirm your request and coordinate pick up.

Please note, in order to view the furniture inventory and reserve items you must be connected to the Johns Hopkins network.

Can you deliver the furniture & office supplies?

Effective February 2021, we will no longer be delivering furniture. Instead, departments will hire and pay an outside mover to have furniture delivered. Below is a list of local companies who are familiar with our program and can provide moving services:

A-L Abatement, Inc

Broadway Transport Services

Hoffberger Moving Services

Von Paris Moving and Storage

Please note that furniture pickups must be coordinated with the Recycling Coordinator, and will only be permitted on Tuesdays.

Can I pick up furniture myself?

Yes. Please note that furniture pickups must be coordinated with the Recycling Coordinator, and will only be permitted on Tuesdays.

What if I purchase items and decide I do not want them once they get to my office?

We encourage you to carefully review the photographs and descriptions of the items on the inventory website and ask the Recycling Coordinator questions prior to reserving. Dimensions and the condition of the items are provided. You may also join your movers at the warehouse on the day of your furniture move, so that you can view your requested items in person. If you are still unsatisfied, unwanted items can be returned to the warehouse at the department's expense.

My office has unused furniture and office supplies. How do I get rid of these?

If you are on the Homewood Campus, you can submit a request for furniture and office supply removal. Manageable quantities of furniture and office supplies will be picked up by Homewood Recycling at the respective hourly recycling labor fee. If you have large items, very heavy items, or a large quantity of pieces, you will need to hire an outside moving company (see above). When you submit a furniture removal request, please include photographs of the items and a brief description so that we may advise you on the best way to proceed.

Please note, in order to submit a recycling request you must be connected to the Johns Hopkins network.

Furniture and supplies will be accepted from departments not located on the Homewood Campus on a case by case basis. Please contact the Recycling Coordinator to discuss.

What items are not acceptable as part of the Hop Reuse Hub?

Lighting, refrigerators, scrap metal, and electronics are not acceptable. All of these materials, except lighting, can be picked up by Homewood Recycling using the recycling request form. Collection of lighting should be directed to the Electric Shop using the service request form

Please note, in order to submit a request you must be connected to the Johns Hopkins network.

My office is not on the Homewood Campus. Am I able to purchase furniture through this program?

We encourage you to first browse the surplus furniture available on your own campus first. See below for a list of campus furniture contacts. If you are unable to find pieces to suit your needs through their program, we are more than happy to serve you.

What other services does the HRH offer?

Fix-it Fairs

Held once during the fall and spring semesters, the Hop Reuse Hub’s Fix-it fairs are an opportunity for JHU community fix-it experts to share their skills with other members, and help repair all kinds of items. The goal of the Fix-it Fair is to inspire and encourage JHU community members to resist the "throw away culture" by learning how to fix everyday items for reuse. We encourage people to bring broken items or just questions. Repair categories include: clothing, jewelry, bikes, skateboards, technology, and furniture. To learn more about our Fix-it Fairs or to volunteer to be a fix-it expert please contact the Recycling Coordinator.

Move Out

We collaborate with JHU Housing and JHU Sustainability to find ways to donate and reuse items that students no longer want at the end of the spring semester. Learn more about the Green Move Out program.

Donations

The Hop Reuse Hub frequently donates furniture and office supplies to Baltimore nonprofits. To date we’ve donated over 1,500 items. To learn more about Hop Reuse Hub donations, please contact the Recycling Coordinator.
